The England Away’s
With the new England Navy away strip available to purchase tomorrow, we take a trip back from the beginning of the millennium at the strips that our English heroes have been competing in at the very pinnacle of world football.
The new away kit which was unveiled the year after Euro 98 was worn my 30 players during its time. It was worn when Shearer’s strike gave England their first victory against Germany in a major tournament since the World Cup winning campaign back in 1966.
2001 – 2003
It was David Beckham who scored that memorable goal in this time frame against Greece at Old Trafford in the famous home England strip with the single red stripe. It was intact Beckham again who scored one of the most important goals of his career in this strip also, that penalty against Argentina in the 2002 World Cup giving them the 1-0 victory.
2003 – 2005
This well remembered England away strip, with the 2 England flags proudly placed on each of the shoulders was worn at Portugal in Euro 2004. Current England manager Gareth Southgate also played his last England game wearing this shirt, which earned him his 57th cap.
2005 – 2007
Not as evident as the previous away shirt, this red strip had just the one smaller England flag embedded on the top of the right shoulder. Only 26 players appeared for England wearing this strip which included international debuts for Darren Bent and, at the time, 19 year old Aaron Lennon.
2007 – 2009
The first England strip in 6 years to have the all important World Cup winning star not above the badge. Beckham captained England for a 59th and final time in this shirt against Trinidad and Tobago. This shirt also saw the first goal of Fabio Capello’s campaign.
2009 – 2010
A famous red England strip to say the least! It was worn for the 2010 World Cup hosted in South Africa and more memorably worn against Germany, when Lampard scored that ‘goal’ that never stood, despite the ball crossing the line by quite a considerable distance!
2010 – 2013
The first Navy strip of the millennium, and first colour other than red since 1996! This kit was used during the EURO 2012 qualifiers where England embarrassingly didn’t make the final tournament stages in 2012. Both Andy Carroll’s and Darren Bent’s last England goals were scored wearing this strip.
2013 – 2014
The first ever Nike England away kit included a collar for the first time on an away strip since 2001. This kit also included a specially designed golden England badge to commemorate 150 years of the national side.
2014 – 2015
An England kit with not much of a background. However England were undefeated the 5 times they wore it, including a 6-0 win away to San Marino in the European Qualifiers.
2016 – 2017
Again, another away kit that England were unbeaten in. This kit included that famous night in Berlin back in 2016 where, all be it a friendly, England came back from 2-0 down to win the match 3-2 thanks to goals from Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Eric Dier.
Back to Navy. I think we will all be hoping for better England performances in this Navy strip compared to the last, but something that we at Knights Sports think is very stylish! Available to purchase tomorrow (22/03/2017) we all, as we always do, can dream that maybe this is the kit where we can see England lift the World Cup once again!
